Race Report

cyclocross, race report, Summit Cycles, Columbia, SC

I made the journey Greenville last Saturday for the Cross in the Park CX race. I’d been told by a friend that I’d love the course but she’s never ridden a single speed bike! To say the course was not SS friendly is putting it mildly. I did the Master 35+ class (my first time with the old guys!) and all 8 of us plus the 4 45+ dudes took off with a 30 second gap to the women’s start. I started well, taking fourth wheel into a singletrack climb, but it all ended about 60 seconds later. The rest of the course was undoubtedly the twistiest race I’ve ever done. We serpentined through at least 8 to 10 tight 180 degree turns, most of which were off camber and a few deposited you into soft mulch. The middle of the course presented us with our only barriers and a long mostly paved run (where everyone passed me on lap 1!) to the back section where we careened through 5 more 180’s leading to a stone stairway. At the top, we had to quickly remount, hop over a row of stones, descend, hop over another small wall of stones and roll through the start/finish. I made three laps before the ladies started passing me. My entire race was: accelerate, brake, accelerate, brake, accelerate, brake, just no flow. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure my lack of fitness had something to do with my poor performance, but so many sprints in a 40 minute effort really take their toll. In the end, I did pass a few folks so I don’t think I was last but close enough. Still, I had fun; I’ll just bring some extra cogs along next time I see a course like that!

In other news, Henry is starting up the Wednesday AFTERNOON rides this week. 2pm start from the shop for a 31miler @18ish mph. If you don’t have a job, or just have a slack one like us, join in!

That’s all for now. Take care and safe cycling. Tim
